Tesla Chargers Removed from the New Jersey Turnpike

Press Release: Tesla Facing Charger Setback on New Jersey Turnpike

In a significant shake-up for electric vehicle infrastructure, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) has announced the removal of 64 Tesla Superchargers effective Friday. This decision follows a breach in contract negotiations, leading NJTA to partner with Applegreen, which will install 240 universal EV chargers across all 21 service areas.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk reacted to the news with a tweet alleging “corruption.” Despite his objections, Tesla acknowledged the potential for this outcome, having prepared by establishing 116 charging stalls off the Turnpike. The company stated it had offered to develop universal Superchargers capable of servicing multiple vehicle types at New Jersey service plazas, should the state reconsider its decision.

Originally, in 2020, NJTA had expanded its agreement with Tesla to increase available charging stations from 20 to 76 and facilitate future installations by third-party providers. The shift to Applegreen marks a pivotal move in the state’s transition to more accessible EV charging options, moving away from Tesla-exclusive infrastructure. Tesla emphasizes its commitment to customer service and expresses willingness to collaborate if state leaders reassess the current strategy.
