Trump Calls for Change in New Jersey’s GOP Primary Supporting Ciattarelli
TRENTON, N.J. – President Donald Trump urged New Jersey voters to back Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the upcoming gubernatorial primary during a telephone rally on Monday. As early in-person voting kicks off Tuesday, Trump emphasized that the state is primed for change after years of Democratic leadership. He described the current situation as a "high-tax, high-crime sanctuary state" and expressed confidence that voters are ready to “pop out of that blue horror show.”
Trump officially endorsed Ciattarelli last month. The former state lawmaker, who transitioned from being a critic to a supporter of Trump, pledged to terminate state sanctuary policies for undocumented immigrants if elected. He criticized the current attorney general for directing local law enforcement to refrain from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement.
Ciattarelli also indicated that he would appoint an attorney general aligned with his administration’s goals, contrasting with the current occupant who has challenged various aspects of Trump’s agenda.
The Republican primary features a competitive field, including former radio host Bill Spadea, state Senator Jon Bramnick, and others. Early voting starts Tuesday and will run through Sunday, culminating in primary day on June 10.
While the Democratic candidate slate is not yet finalized, prominent figures like Reps. Josh Gottheimer and Mikie Sherrill, along with Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and former Senate President Steve Sweeney, are in contention. New Jersey historically leans Democratic in statewide races, but with independents forming a sizable voting bloc, the outcome remains uncertain.
As the primary approaches, Ciattarelli reiterated criticisms of Democratic governance, indicating a strategy to target the party’s long tenure in power.
