Wisconsin Man Allegedly Faked Threats Against Trump to Secure Witness’s Deportation, Officials Report

Demetric D. Scott, a 52-year-old man from Wisconsin, has been charged with forging letters in an attempt to frame Ramón Morales Reyes, a potential witness against him in a robbery case. Scott allegedly sent letters, posing as Morales Reyes, which included threats against Donald Trump and criticisms of immigration policies to state and federal authorities. These letters led to the arrest of Morales Reyes on May 22, based on the return address.

While officials, including the Department of Homeland Security, initially presented Morales Reyes as a threat, subsequent investigations revealed discrepancies. Notably, Morales Reyes struggles with English and his handwriting was inconsistent with the letters. During questioning, he suggested that Scott, who had previously robbed him, was the perpetrator behind the fraudulent letters.

Further scrutiny of Scott’s jail phone calls revealed that he had discussed plans to get Morales Reyes deported to prevent him from testifying at Scott’s trial. He acknowledged writing the letters, claiming desperation for “freedom” and intending to disrupt the legal process. Evidence gathered during a search of Scott’s cell linked him directly to the letters.

Scott has been charged with felony witness intimidation, identity theft, and two counts of bail jumping. Meanwhile, Morales Reyes remains in ICE custody amidst ongoing removal proceedings, albeit he is seeking a U-visa as a victim of crime, which could potentially allow him to stay in the U.S. for up to four years if he cooperates in the investigation. The case highlights complex issues surrounding immigration status, legal defense, and witness intimidation in criminal proceedings.
