Grant Hardin, a convict featured in the HBO documentary “Devil in the Ozarks,” escaped from an Arkansas prison on May 25, leading to an extensive search effort. The Arkansas Department of Corrections recently provided an updated illustration of how Hardin, 56, might look today, noting that his appearance may have changed over the nearly ten days since his escape. Security footage shows Hardin dressed in a law enforcement-style uniform, attempting to evade guards by pushing a cart loaded with wooden pallets out of the North Central Unit in Calico Rock.
Hardin previously served as police chief of Gateway, Arkansas, for a brief period in 2016, before resigning after clashing with city water department employee James Appleton. The documentary highlights these conflicts, culminating in Hardin fatally shooting Appleton in February 2017, for which he was sentenced to 30 years after pleading guilty. DNA tests later linked him to a 1997 on-campus rape case, resulting in a 50-year sentence for that conviction as well.
The current search for Hardin is focused on his native north-central Arkansas, specifically the town of Garfield, where his parents reside. The reward for information leading to his capture has increased to $25,000, following contributions from the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service. Hardin is described as a white male, 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing approximately 259 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. Authorities are urging anyone with potential sightings or information to contact the FBI or the Corrections Department.
