Local Farm Transforms Hay Field into Popular Lavender and Alpaca Haven
Skillman, NJ – Twenty-five years ago, Marie and Steve Voorhees transformed their hay field into Hidden Spring Lavender Farm, attracting visitors every weekend with lush lavender fields and a charming herd of alpacas. In 2012, the couple shifted from hay to lavender cultivation, planting 1,000 lavender plants that now number around 5,000 across 15 varieties. The aromatic plant has become the farm’s signature attraction, complemented by a shop selling lavender-based products, from oils to plush toys.
In 2018, the couple added alpacas, starting with just four. Today, their herd has grown to 22, delighting guests with alpaca walks and festive events. Some alpacas are also bred for their high-quality fibers, winning awards at competitions.
Despite navigating challenges such as the pandemic and regulatory hurdles, the Voorheeses maintained a commitment to affordability with few price increases over the years, allowing free visits on non-event days. They also contribute to local organizations, emphasizing their dedication to community and quality. “It’s strictly a labor of love,” Marie remarks, illustrating the spirit behind Hidden Spring Lavender Farm. The farm is located at 890 Route 601, Skillman; for more information, call 609-558-7034.
