Op-Ed: Governor Kean Advocates for State Funding to Support Local News

Revitalizing Local News: A Call to Action for New Jersey

In a recent statement, former New Jersey Governor Thomas H. Kean emphasized the critical role of local journalism in upholding democracy. Reflecting on his experience co-authoring the Kean-Byrne Dialogue, he highlighted the importance of civility and bipartisanship in discourse, which is increasingly at risk due to significant layoffs and downsizing in local media.

Kean underscored that shared, reliable information is foundational for informed debate and effective governance. He praised the New Jersey Civic Information Consortium, an innovative nonprofit initiative established by leaders including Assembly Majority Leader Louis Greenwald and Gov. Phil Murphy. This organization works to fill the gaps left by dwindling news outlets, fostering community engagement through various platforms such as Montclair Local and The Trenton Journal, which focus on the specific needs of their communities.

Additionally, the Consortium invests in training the next generation of reporters and citizens in journalism, underscoring the urgency of informed communities. However, Kean expressed concern over Gov. Murphy’s proposed budget cuts, urging the Legislature to prioritize funding for local news to ensure a connected and informed public. “Without reliable journalism, we risk deepening polarization and division,” Kean warned.
