2025 NJ Primary: Voter Turnout on the Rise

Higher Turnout Expected in New Jersey’s Gubernatorial Primaries

In New Jersey, early voting trends indicate a surge in interest for this year’s gubernatorial primaries, suggesting a potential record turnout on Election Day. Over 308,000 people have already cast their ballots, significantly surpassing early turnout from previous years. Close to 27,000 votes were recorded on the first day of in-person early voting, marking a notable increase from last year’s presidential primaries.

This year, the early voting period has expanded from three to six days, responding to a significant shift in voter engagement, particularly among Democrats, who have outpaced Republicans in early voting. Political analysts believe that the competitive nature of the races, with 11 major-party candidates vying for the open seat, is fueling this interest.

Hudson County has emerged as a hotspot, seeing the highest in-person turnout, while Camden County leads in mail-in ballots. The gubernatorial race is reportedly among the most expensive in state history, with over $155 million raised.

As voters head to the polls Tuesday, June 10, both Democrats and Republicans are gearing up for a pivotal primary, with early voting continuing until Saturday. The influx of engaged voters could reshape the political landscape ahead of the November general election.
