Nicole Daedone, founder of OneTaste Inc., and former sales director Rachel Cherwitz were found guilty of federal forced labor charges by a Brooklyn jury. Following a five-week trial, they face up to 20 years in prison for their roles in a scheme that exploited vulnerable individuals, particularly those with past sexual trauma. Prosecutors argued that Daedone and Cherwitz used psychological, economic, and sexual manipulation to coerce members into uncomfortable sexual situations, presenting these acts as pathways to “freedom” and “enlightenment.”
The prosecution characterized the organization as a business that profited from its members’ labor, with many users not receiving promised income and some even coerced into taking out credit cards to finance their involvement. U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella described the defendants as “grifters” who made false promises of empowerment while manipulating victims.
In their defense, Daedone was portrayed as a feminist entrepreneur promoting women’s sexuality. Cherwitz’s lawyer argued that participants always had the choice to leave the organization, claiming that regret after the fact does not indicate wrongdoing.
Daedone co-founded OneTaste in 2004, branding it as a wellness commune focused on sexual and psychological health, with its signature practice being “orgasmic meditation.” The company enjoyed considerable attention in the 2010s, hosting workshops and events that highlighted women’s sexual pleasure.
Daedone sold her stake in the company in 2017, shortly before the scrutiny of its practices began. OneTaste’s new owners, who rebranded it as the Institute of OM Foundation, maintain that allegations of misconduct are unfounded and emphasize that consent is central to their philosophy. The defendants plan to appeal their convictions.
