Revitalization Plans for Historic Roebling Wire Works in Trenton
Trenton, NJ – Once a vital hub of American industry, the Roebling Wire Works factory, known for producing cables for the Brooklyn and Golden Gate bridges, is on track for a significant revival. The factory, which ceased operations in 1973, will benefit from a $7 million grant from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority aimed at extensive renovations. Currently housing a skateboard park and a nonprofit circus workshop, the landmark building, founded in 1848, is listed on the state and national historic registers.
Mayor Reed Gusciora announced that half of the grant will be allocated for essential repairs, including window and roof restorations, and stabilizing the building’s structure. The proposed renovations aim to transform the site into a vibrant civic center, capable of hosting community events and accommodating thousands of visitors. Gusciora envisions a multifunctional space that will serve diverse community needs, featuring farmers market shops showcasing locally sourced products. This revitalization not only preserves Trenton’s rich industrial heritage but also enhances the city’s community services, signaling a hopeful future for the area.
