Way Out West Weekend Showcases Equestrian Competitions in Ramona
The Ramona Outdoor Community Center was abuzz with excitement during the Way Out West Weekend held on May 17 and 18. This family-friendly event featured competitive equestrian activities, including barrel racing, pole bending, and team penning, all aimed at raising funds for the philanthropic efforts of the Ramona Rodeo Foundation. The foundation supports local nonprofits, educational scholarships, and various community initiatives, as highlighted by organizers Selena Roberts, Jeanne Malone, and Rachelle Laws.
Saturday’s festivities also included informative equine wellness presentations, engaging both participants and spectators. One of the highlights was the inaugural Steve Tellam Memorial Team Penning event, which took place on Sunday. This year’s champions included Pro Am Novice participants Michelle Cheek, Braden Greer, and Kathy Mitchell, who received their awards from the 2025 Ramona Rodeo Court.
Youth competitors shined as well, with champions like Gianna Joyce in youth barrel racing and Amanda Lewis, Lori Bibbens, and Kyle Greer in team penning. This event not only honored the late Steve Tellam and his family, who made significant contributions to local equestrian activities, but it also served as a qualifying competition for the upcoming Ramona Rodeo.
The weekend culminated with excitement and community spirit, reflecting the dedication of the Rodeo Foundation to enhance local equestrian sports. Looking ahead, the Ramona Rodeo Jr. Barrels Qualifier is scheduled for August 16, with the Ramona Rodeo set for August 21-23.
