Gavin Newsom Claims Democracy is Under Threat While Criticizing Trump’s Immigration Policies

California Governor Gavin Newsom delivered a pointed address criticizing President Donald Trump’s federalization of the National Guard and deployment of Marines to address ongoing protests in Los Angeles. In a speech aimed at a national audience, Newsom condemned Trump’s immigration policies and highlighted the dangers to democracy posed by the president’s actions, stating, “This moment we have feared has arrived.” He argued that authoritarianism begins by targeting vulnerable populations and warned that the threat to democracy extends beyond California.

Newsom’s remarks followed a surge in clashes between protesters and law enforcement, as Trump activated thousands of National Guard members without a request from the state and deployed over 700 Marines since the protests began. In response to Newsom’s criticisms, Trump accused the governor of incompetence and suggested law enforcement should arrest him.

During his address, Newsom asserted that Trump’s administration thrives on division and chaos, which he believes allows for further consolidation of power. He claimed that Trump’s approach to law enforcement transforms the rule of law into the “rule of Don,” referencing the January 6 Capitol riot to illustrate his point.

As tensions escalated in Los Angeles, Police Chief Jim McDonnell reported significant unrest and noted that 378 individuals had been arrested since the onset of the protests. Newsom’s address reflects his positioning as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, emphasizing the national implications of the crisis emerging in California and urging vigilance against authoritarianism. The White House did not respond immediately to Newsom’s comments.
