U.S. immigration officials detained Khaby Lame, a popular TikTok personality, last week, claiming he overstayed his visa terms. Born Seringe Khabane Lame, the Italian-Senegalese creator entered the U.S. on April 30, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Following his detention at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Lame was granted “voluntary departure” and reportedly left the country shortly after. Despite these developments, he has been active on social media, with his latest Instagram story suggesting he is currently in Brazil.
Lame’s agency, Sharks Celebrities Mgmt, dismissed the ICE report as “fake news,” asserting Lame did not visit the U.S. that month and questioning the accuracy of the name cited in the report. It remains unclear when he last visited the U.S., however, he did attend the Met Gala in May. With a massive following of 162.2 million on TikTok, Lame gained fame for his humorous content during the pandemic after losing his factory job in Italy. Additionally, he serves as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF.
His detention occurs amid a broader crackdown on immigration under the Trump administration, which has seen increased scrutiny at U.S. entry points. Concerns have been raised among travelers regarding encounters with customs officials, as evidenced by similar experiences shared by other social media figures, like Hasan Piker, who was questioned at O’Hare Airport.
The heightened vigilance and immigration raids across the U.S. have led to protests, especially in cities like Los Angeles, against aggressive enforcement strategies.
