Christa M. Compton Elected Bishop of New Jersey Synod of ELCA
Chatham, N.J. – Christa M. Compton has been elected as the new bishop of the New Jersey Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The election occurred during the synod assembly held from June 5-7 at the Hilton East Brunswick Hotel & Executive Meeting Center.
Compton, who has served as the pastor of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Chatham since 2013, was elected on the fifth ballot, garnering 235 votes. Maristela Freiberg, the current assistant to the bishop and director for evangelical mission in the synod, received 116 votes in the election.
The newly elected bishop expressed gratitude for the trust placed in her and emphasized her commitment to serving the synod and its communities over the next six years. Compton’s leadership is expected to foster growth and collaboration among congregations in the New Jersey Synod.
The assembly provided a platform for discussions on faith and community, with Compton’s election marking a significant moment for the synod as it moves forward under her guidance.
