Ciattarelli Sets Sights on New Jersey Governorship with Promises of Reform
HOLMDEL, New Jersey—In a spirited rally after a decisive primary victory, Jack Ciattarelli, the Republican gubernatorial nominee, reaffirmed his commitment to a “safer, more prosperous, and affordable New Jersey.” Speaking to supporters, Ciattarelli emphasized his awareness of upcoming openings in the state’s Supreme Court, following his victory in all 21 counties, where he secured over 67% of the primary vote, bolstered by an endorsement from former President Donald Trump.
The 63-year-old businessman and former assemblyman is gearing up for a competitive general election against Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill, who emerged from her primary with more than 34% of the vote. Ciattarelli aims to challenge Sherrill on several fronts, particularly on judicial appointments. He advocates for selecting the “most qualified nominees,” prioritizing adherence to legislative law over perceived activist judicial practices.
Legal issues are expected to dominate the campaign, especially the controversial Abbott v. Burke ruling on school funding and the Mount Laurel decision on affordable housing. Ciattarelli expressed intentions to repeal New Jersey’s sanctuary law and ban sanctuary cities, highlighting voter concerns over immigration and public safety.
Supporters like Michel Hurtado, vice chair of the Trenton Republican Party, echoed the need for reform in judicial appointments. Meanwhile, Sherrill’s campaign focuses on criminal justice reform and gun violence concerns but has yet to define her judicial selection criteria.
As the November 4 election approaches, Ciattarelli appears energized by his primary success but acknowledges the challenges posed by Democrats’ substantial voter registration advantage in the state. However, he remains optimistic, suggesting that New Jersey could be “in play.”
With strong backing and clear reform agendas, Ciattarelli is ready to make his case to the Garden State voters as he looks to overturn a decade-long trend of Democratic gubernatorial dominance.
