JERSEY CITY, NJ – As the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins, New Jersey is gearing up for an extraordinary celebration, with the final match set to take place at MetLife Stadium. This marks the first World Cup hosted in North America since 1994.
On Wednesday, Governor Phil Murphy, joined by officials and local stakeholders, unveiled plans for the event at Liberty State Park, which will also host the official fan festival. "The MetLife experience will be outstanding," he emphasized, promising a secure, accessible, and fan-friendly experience.
MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford is slated to host eight matches, including five group-stage games and knockout rounds. Excitement is palpable, with the Governor stating, "This is what it’s all about… the reaction was excitement, energy, and interest."
Alex Lasry, CEO of the NYNJ Host Committee, expressed confidence in the event’s potential. "It’s real. We’re a year out, and the excitement is contagious," he noted. Liberty State Park, with stunning views of the New York City skyline and the Statue of Liberty, will host a fan festival with a capacity for 45,000 attendees, featuring 22 screens for viewing additional World Cup matches.
