Mel Brooks Reveals ‘Spaceballs’ Sequel in New Video

Mel Brooks is set to reprise his iconic role as Yogurt in a sequel to the beloved 1987 spoof “Spaceballs.” The announcement came in a humorous post on X (formerly Twitter) on June 12, where Brooks teased fans with a clip that parodies the expansion of franchises like “Star Wars,” “Dune,” and various other popular series. The video, featuring scrolling text and a nostalgic score, jokes about the numerous sequels and adaptations produced in the past thirty-eight years, emphasizing that “there has only ever been one … ‘Spaceballs.’ Until now …”

In the clip, Brooks humorously remarks, “After 40 years, we asked, ‘What do the fans want?’ But instead, we’re making this movie.” The teaser culminates with the phrase “The Schwartz awakens in 2027,” echoing the beloved phrases from the original film. Brooks playfully concludes with “May the Schwartz be with you.”

While specific details on the film’s title and plot remain under wraps, it has been described as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film” by Amazon MGM Studios. The film will be directed by Josh Greenbaum, with a writing team that includes actor Josh Gad, who expressed his excitement about the project on Instagram.

Returning cast members include Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis, reprising their roles as Lone Starr and Dark Helmet, respectively. Moranis, who has been largely absent from film for nearly thirty years, will be a significant highlight for fans. Additionally, Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman, son of Bill Pullman, are also set to star. Further casting details are expected as the release date approaches.
