25 Animals Rescued from N.J. Aquarium Following Abuse Allegations

Press Release: 25 Animals Removed from SeaQuest Woodbridge Amid Regulatory Violations

Middlesex County, NJ — On Thursday, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) confiscated 25 animals from SeaQuest Woodbridge, an aquarium located in the Woodbridge Center mall. This action came after the facility was found to be in violation of multiple wildlife regulations, including the Endangered and Nongame Species Conservation Act.

The animals, which included reptiles, birds, and mammals, were relocated to safer environments. DEP spokeswoman Caryn Shinske stated that these removals followed an administrative order issued last month that mandated the seizure of all regulated species due to repeated infractions.

SeaQuest Woodbridge has faced numerous challenges since its opening in 2019, with over 3,500 complaints lodged against it regarding potential animal mistreatment. A lengthy investigation by state officials revealed serious deficiencies, including inadequate enclosures, poor veterinary care, and instances of animals injuring one another due to overcrowded conditions.

Despite these ongoing issues, the facility remained operational as of Friday, advertising ticket sales on its website while claiming to be “closed for renovations” on the day of the animal removal. Notably, the company’s financial troubles have also escalated; SeaQuest Holdings filed for bankruptcy last December, owing over $381,000 in back rent.

The aquarium has been cited more than 80 times over the past five years by various agencies, raising significant concerns about animal welfare and safety. With SeaQuest’s operational future now uncertain, state officials continue to monitor the situation closely while emphasizing the importance of compliance with wildlife laws.
