Press Release: Protests Erupt Following ICE Detention Center Escape in Newark
NEWARK, NJ – Tensions flared in Newark on Thursday night after four migrants escaped from the Delaney Hall ICE detention center amidst a disturbance. Mayor Ras Baraka attributed the chaos to the Trump administration, criticizing the federal oversight in immigration enforcement.
The issue escalated when approximately 50 detainees reportedly became agitated over meal delays, leading to the destruction of a dormitory wall. Immigration attorney Mustafa Cetin explained that some detainees fashioned makeshift escape routes, which culminated in the getaway. The four escapees, identified as public safety threats—two Hondurans and two Colombians—include individuals with prior criminal records.
GOP leader Kenny Gonzalez condemned Baraka’s response, arguing that the Democratic Party has contributed to nationwide chaos by encouraging such behavior. “This type of behavior from Democrat left-wing politicians tells the public that it’s okay to engage in rioting and unrest,” he stated, reflecting a broader concern about the perceived leniency towards undocumented migrants.
Baraka, however, called for immediate reforms in the operation of private prisons and emphasized the need for greater oversight, claiming the federal government has neglected the basic rights of detainees. This incident follows recent protests against ICE enforcement, particularly highlighted by Congresswoman LaMonica McIver’s controversial visit to the center, which ended in her indictment on federal charges.
As further protests are anticipated, Gonzalez warned that the situation in Newark could escalate, calling for Gov. Phil Murphy to empower law enforcement. “We just pray that it doesn’t escalate to the level that requires federal intervention,” he remarked.
The developments underscore the growing tensions surrounding immigration policy and enforcement in New Jersey amidst nationwide debates. The situation remains fluid as local authorities brace for potential unrest over the weekend.
