Wildfire Rages in Wharton State Forest, New Jersey

A significant wildfire, named the Mines Spung Wildfire, is currently burning in the Wharton State Forest near the Emilio Carranza Memorial, affecting over 4,200 acres as of Saturday morning. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service (NJFFS) reported that the fire is 40% contained, but difficulties in control persist due to the "serious burning" conditions, according to NJFFS Chief Bill Donnelly.

About 150 firefighters, supported by 25 fire trucks and local fire engines, are combating the blaze, which was first detected by a private aircraft around 5 a.m. on Saturday. The combination of dry, sandy soil and the remote location complicates firefighting efforts, as stated by NJFFS Assistant Firewarden David Achey.

Smoke from the fire has impacted air quality across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Local roads, including Tuckerton Road and areas around the Batona Trail, are closed. In a precautionary measure, Lower Forge Campground and Phillip M. Costello Preparatory Academy were evacuated. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, though nearby residents remain vigilant. The cause of the wildfire is still under investigation.
