Press Release: Surge in Yoga Adoption Post International Day of Yoga

A comprehensive survey conducted by the Ayush Ministry reveals that over 41% of participants have integrated yoga into their lifestyles a decade after the United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. The survey, covering 30,084 households across 34 states and union territories, highlights significant health benefits linked to yoga practice.

Key findings indicate that 24.6% of respondents reported improved fitness levels due to yoga, while 16.9% noted reduced stress. Around 25% of respondents also expressed an increased awareness of health benefits associated with dietary and lifestyle choices. The survey, titled "Impact Assessment of a Decade of International Day of Yoga (IDY): Survey Findings," shows that 11.2% of respondents practice yoga regularly, with 13.4% participating occasionally, and a considerable 75.5% not engaging in yoga at all.

Dr. Raghavendra Rao, Director of the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), clarified that the 41% who have embraced yoga exhibit varied practices, from bhakti yoga (devotional practice) to meditation, highlighting its widespread adaptability.

The survey data indicated that regular yoga practitioners comprise 12.6% in urban areas compared to 10.4% in rural settings, while 11.6% of male respondents practiced regularly, against 10.7% of females. Awareness peaks in the 18-24 age group, yet the highest participation in yoga is noted among those aged 65 and older at 17%. Additionally, 36.2% of participants with health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension reported practicing yoga.

The survey also noted that 39.3% of respondents are aware of common yoga protocols and one-third have participated in community events related to IDY over the past decade, underscoring yoga’s growing relevance in public health discourse.
