Vietnam Aims for $8 Billion in Fruit and Vegetable Exports Amid Challenges
Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has outlined a strategic focus on enhancing product quality and adopting advanced technology to sustain its fruit and vegetable export sector, according to reports from Bao Dau Tu. The country has set an ambitious goal of achieving $8 billion in export value by 2025, although recent figures indicate a concerning 16% drop in export value this year, totaling $2.24 billion during the first five months.
Despite the overall decline, certain products have demonstrated strong performance, particularly mangoes, coconuts, and processed coconut items. China remains the largest market for Vietnamese exports, accounting for 46.1%, followed by the United States at 9.1% and South Korea at 6%.
Companies such as Vina T&T and Red Dragon Production are leading efforts by investing in preservation technology, traceability solutions, and cold storage facilities to meet international quality standards. A noteworthy highlight was the recent shipment of 100 tons of early-ripening lychees from Bac Giang to Paris, where they commanded impressive wholesale prices ranging from $8.60 to $9.40 per kilogram.
Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien emphasized the importance of sustainable production practices and compliance with sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) standards as crucial elements for accessing high-end markets. While free trade agreements present significant opportunities, Deputy Tien underscored that businesses must align their operations with international technical requirements to secure long-term growth and success in the export sector.
With these initiatives underway, Vietnam aims to not only recover from its current export decline but also establish a robust presence in the global fruit and vegetable market.
