Historic Nike Missile Site Reimagined as a Unique Camping Destination in N.J.

Experience Historic Camping at Sandy Hook’s New Nike Missile Campsite

New Jersey’s camping scene has taken a unique turn with the opening of a new campsite at Sandy Hook, housed in refurbished U.S. Army barracks from the 1950s. Located behind the historic Nike Missile Radar site, the campsite is officially recognized by the National Park Service and can accommodate groups of up to 30 campers.

This newly established site features two tented barracks—one with metal bed frames and another without—offering guests the option to sleep comfortably or under the stars. Amenities include charcoal grills, parking, a fresh water station, lock boxes, and restroom facilities with flushing toilets. Guests also have access to a campground store, the only source for firewood on the island.

The barracks were originally built between 1954 and 1956 and served as living quarters for soldiers tasked with operating radar and launch systems during the Cold War. Recently restored thanks to a $100,000 donation from the Sandy Hook Foundation, the campsite offers a unique blend of history and outdoor adventure.

Reservations are now available through July 13. For more details, visit the National Park Service website to secure your spot at this historic location.
