Coast Guard Hero Scott Ruskan Comes to the Rescue of Texas Flood Victims

Coast Guard Rescuer Heroes Amid Texas Floods

Kerrville, Texas — Coast Guard Petty Officer Scott Ruskan is being hailed a hero after his first rescue mission saved 165 victims from devastating flash floods in Texas. The 26-year-old New Jersey native, who previously worked as an accountant, joined the Coast Guard in 2021, and after extensive training, was called into action on July 4 when severe storms struck central Texas, leading to fatalities and extensive damage.

“It’s why we take these risks,” Ruskan remarked, emphasizing the dedication of Coast Guard personnel. As triage lead at Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ summer camp severely affected by the floods, he faced dire circumstances. With roads impassable and lives at stake, Ruskan coordinated helicopter evacuations, prioritizing the safety of terrified, injured survivors, which included children as young as eight.

Despite the challenges, Ruskan and his team successfully rescued numerous individuals. He expressed gratitude but remained humble, attributing the success to a collaborative effort among various rescue teams. “Any Coast Guard member would have done the same,” Ruskan said, underscoring the shared commitment to service. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem praised Ruskan’s act of bravery, highlighting his embodiment of the Coast Guard’s mission.
