Rep. Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, stated on “Meet the Press” that while he believes the upcoming election will be free and fair, he does not expect it to be peaceful. He predicts that if former President Donald Trump loses, he will contest the results, not due to any flaws in the election process but because he believes he may face legal consequences if he does not win. Schiff’s comments echo President Joe Biden’s concerns about the potential for violence following the election, citing the January 6th Capitol riot as an example.
Schiff, who is currently running for Senate, emphasized the importance of a significant margin of victory to prevent challenges to the election results. He expressed confidence in Vice President Kamala Harris’s ability to win but stressed the need to mobilize voters to ensure a clear outcome. The congressman highlighted the need to counter the threat of violence stemming from Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud by driving voter turnout.
While he expects a victory for Harris, Schiff cautioned that the race could still be “scary close” and emphasized the importance of a decisive outcome to mitigate potential unrest. He called on Democrats to focus on maximizing their margins and energizing their base to thwart any attempts to challenge the election results from Republicans. NBC News has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment on the matter.
