U.S. Citizen Sentenced to Six Years in Russian Prison for Kidnapping Son

A U.S. citizen named Daniel Joseph Schneider has been sentenced to six years in jail and fined 100,000 roubles for kidnapping his four-year-old son, who is a Russian citizen, without permission from the boy’s mother. Schneider was detained by Russia’s border service near Poland while trying to leave the country. He had reportedly tried to get permission from the child’s mother to take him abroad but she refused. Schneider’s lawyers were not available for comment. In August, there was a major prisoner exchange between Russia, the United States, and other countries, involving 24 prisoners. 16 prisoners were moved from Russia to the West, while eight were sent back to Russia from the West.
