Alt-Rocker Matthew Sweet, famous for ’90s smash ‘Girlfriend,’ experiences ‘debilitating’ stroke while on tour

Singer-songwriter Matthew Sweet suffered a debilitating stroke while on tour in Toronto in mid-October, leaving him unable to perform for the foreseeable future. To cover his recovery expenses, a GoFundMe page was set up by his management company as Sweet currently doesn’t have insurance or touring income. The cost of his care, including ambulance transport back to the U.S. and months of rehabilitation, is estimated to be close to a quarter of a million dollars.

The fundraiser has raised over $150,000 from about 2,700 donors, including notable names like director Judd Apatow, musician John Mayer, and R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck. Sweet’s manager expressed confidence in his determination to recover and return to good health, noting his focus and tenacity in all endeavors.

Sweet had to cancel over a month of shows due to health issues, including opening for Hanson and preparing for his own headlining dates. He has released over a dozen albums since 1986, with his most recent being 2021’s “Catspaw.” Fans and supporters are encouraged to donate to help Sweet on his road to recovery, with his team expressing gratitude for any financial assistance.
