The Philippines is bracing for yet another potentially catastrophic typhoon, Man-yi, as the country faces its sixth storm in a month. With winds reaching 240km/h, the super typhoon is expected to make landfall near Catanduanes province, posing a life-threatening situation for the central region of Bicol. Nearly 180,000 people have already been evacuated, with more orders likely to come as the storm approaches the main island of Luzon.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has directed all government agencies to prepare for the worst-case scenario in areas that are expected to be hit by the typhoon. Civil defence administrator Ariel Nepomuceno emphasized the need for readiness as millions are at risk from the storm surges and heavy rains that are expected to accompany Man-yi. The weather agency has issued alerts for Category 5 and Category 4 in certain provinces, with dangerous storm surges predicted to reach up to 3 meters in coastal areas.
In response, authorities have ordered the cancellation of dozens of flights and imposed curfews in some areas to ensure residents remain safe indoors. The evacuation efforts are ongoing, with hundreds of thousands of people being relocated to shelters to wait out the storm. The Philippines faces an average of 20 tropical storms each year, and the recent onslaught of storms in October and November has taken a heavy toll on the country, with hundreds of fatalities and missing persons reported. Authorities are urging residents to take precautions and stay informed as they prepare for the impact of Man-yi and future storms.
