Investigators discover 11 children working hazardous overnight cleaning shift at meat processing plant

A cleaning company, Qvest LLC, was fined $171,000 for employing 11 children to work an “dangerous” overnight shift at a meat processing plant in Iowa. The children were using corrosive cleaners to clean equipment at the Seaboard Triumph Foods facility, which is illegal under U.S. labor laws. Qvest must pay the fine, not engage in oppressive child labor, and hire a third-party company to review its underage employment policies. This is not the first time underage workers have been found at this facility, as another company, Fayette Janitorial Services LLC, was fined for using children at the same plant and at a Perdue Farms facility in Virginia. The Department of Labor found labor violations involving over 4,000 children in the 2024 financial year, resulting in over $15 million in fines, an 89% increase from the previous year.

Paul DeCamp, counsel for Seaboard Triumph Foods, stated that fraudulent workers are obtaining jobs using forged documents, which can fool the federal government’s E-Verify system. A year-long NBC News investigation into underage workers in slaughterhouses revealed stories like that of Duvan PĂ©rez, a 16-year-old who died after getting stuck in machinery and using the ID of a 32-year-old man to get the job. The investigation highlights the issue of underage workers being hired in slaughterhouses and meat processing facilities, despite laws prohibiting child labor in these dangerous environments.
