Fire Official: ‘A lot of work’ needed as 3,700 return following Malibu fire

Cooler weather in California has helped firefighters make significant progress in containing the Franklin Fire in Malibu. Over 3,000 residents have been allowed to return home as the fire, which has burned over 4,000 acres and destroyed homes, was 30% contained by Thursday night. The fire broke out near a tunnel in Malibu Canyon on Monday and was fueled by high winds. Actor Dick Van Dyke and musician Cher were among those who evacuated. The fire came close to Pepperdine University, and some roads have since been reopened to residents. Six residential structures have been destroyed and one damaged. More than 1,700 firefighting personnel and 16 helicopters were assigned to the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Even though progress has been made, the fire is not over, and there is still work to be done to ensure safety for everyone. The cooler weather has allowed firefighters to go deeper into the fire areas and mop up, with some light rain aiding in the efforts. The newly formed Community Fire Brigade in Los Angeles County is also playing a role in fighting the fire and advocating for better fire adaptability in the community. Despite the challenging terrain, firefighters are working diligently to continue making advancements in containing the fire.
