Red States Launch Initiatives to Reduce State Government Spending, Inspired by DOGE

Red states across the country are taking on President Donald Trump’s mission to reduce the size and cost of the federal government by launching their own initiatives to make government more efficient. Inspired by Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), GOP governors and lawmakers in states like Texas, Kansas, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin are setting up their own task forces to find ways to cut spending at the state level.

While conservatives have long sought to shrink government size, Democrats argue that these efforts may be redundant as many states already have watchdogs and efficiency panels. However, Republican governors like Iowa’s Kim Reynolds have made strides in consolidating agencies, centralizing programs, reducing regulations, and finding savings. In contrast, Democratic governors in blue states are also taking steps to make government more efficient.

The initiatives aim to cut waste and inefficiencies, but opinions vary on what constitutes waste versus vital services. The Volcker Alliance estimates that states lose $1 trillion annually due to tax breaks and incentives. While these cuts may not be painful now due to a booming economy and federal aid, the efforts could lead to meaningful changes in government operations and spending.

Conservative groups like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) are working with lawmakers nationwide to push for government efficiency measures. These efforts may lead to tough spending decisions as revenues decline, but the goal is to provide core government services more efficiently. Making government more efficient is a gradual process, with small changes like streamlining filings in Kansas already showing potential savings and encouraging other agencies to follow suit.
