New Jersey lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow health care professionals from out of state to practice in the state for up to one year while awaiting a decision on their license application. The bill aims to address a growing workforce shortage in the health care field, particularly in behavioral health care.
Advocates are urging for increased funding in the upcoming state budget to support the behavioral health-care workforce and to avoid cutting funds for organizations that provide these services. The bill would also require a thorough disciplinary review of professionals seeking a temporary license to practice in New Jersey.
However, concerns have been raised about the exclusion of social work interns in the bill, who are currently unable to provide services via telehealth due to existing regulations. Advocates argue that this limitation hinders workforce development and access to care for consumers.
The bill, which has passed the Assembly, is now awaiting review by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee.
