UNIFE proposes investing $3.8 billion to further develop rail technology in Europe

The European Rail Supply Industry Association (UNIFE) is pushing for a €3bn investment in a dedicated Rail Research Programme in the upcoming EU Budget to maintain the industry’s technological leadership. UNIFE aims to integrate advanced technologies like FRMCS, DAC, ATO, and ERTMS into more EU rail networks. The investment will focus on developing new technologies and building on existing innovations to enhance passenger and freight services, increase network reliability, and support the shift from road to rail for freight transport. This initiative is part of the European Commission’s proposals for the next Multiannual Financial Framework and aligns with Europe’s climate neutrality objectives. UNIFE also plans to propose a pre-deployment strategy for integrating these technologies across more rail networks in the EU. Additionally, the International Union of Railways is leading a project to test FRMCS technology under real-world conditions. The investment is crucial for the success of future High-Speed Rail projects, achieving the Single European Railway Area, and completing the Trans-European Transport Network. By staying ahead in rail technology development, European companies can contribute to global competitiveness and meet the EU’s climate objectives.
