An Israeli air strike on a tent camp in Gaza housing Palestinians displaced by the war has resulted in at least 40 deaths and 60 injuries, according to Palestinian officials. The attack on al-Mawasi, a humanitarian zone for civilians seeking shelter, was one of the deadliest strikes to hit the area. Rescuers worked tirelessly to recover bodies and victims, with the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis receiving about two dozen casualties.
The Israeli military claimed the strike targeted Hamas forces in a command-and-control center, however, Hamas denied having fighters in the area. Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza has caused widespread destruction and displaced 90% of the population multiple times. The displacement orders have forced hundreds of thousands of people into overcrowded tent camps like al-Mawasi, where aid groups struggle to provide basic services.
Despite being designated as a humanitarian zone by Israel, the area has been a frequent target of Israeli attacks. The recent strike has further intensified tensions in the region and raised concerns about the safety and well-being of civilians in Gaza. The international community has called for an immediate ceasefire and for all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians in the ongoing conflict.
