HS2, the high-speed rail project in the UK, is giving a sneak peek into the future of train travel. Although the exact destinations for HS2 services are still unclear, passengers can expect to be seated in the “best seats of any UK trains” when the trains are completed in 2026.
HS2 is prioritizing passenger comfort by offering more legroom, reclining seats, built-in reading lights, charging points, fold-up tables, and device racks. The toilets on the trains are also designed with innovations like changing tables, pull-down seats for toddlers, and pull-out racks for bags.
The trains will feature slightly more headroom than usual and will have dedicated spaces for bikes, pushchairs, and unfolded buggies. The carriages will also have retractable steps for stations with lower platforms, allowing for easier boarding.
The trains will be manufactured across three sites in England as part of a £1.6bn contract. Despite some controversy surrounding HS2 and changes in costs due to political indecision, the trains are moving forward with production.
As the future of HS2 remains uncertain, with debates around additional rail lines and funding for tunnels to Euston station, the unveiling of the mock-ups offers a glimpse of what passengers can expect when they finally board the high-speed trains.
