Press Release: Tragic Incident Near University of Delaware Claims Life of Graduate Student
Newark, DE – A tragic accident near the University of Delaware on Tuesday claimed the life of a 24-year-old graduate student from New Jersey. The woman, who was pursuing a doctorate in chemistry, has not been publicly identified. A second graduate student, also 24, sustained serious injuries but is currently in stable condition, according to local police.
The incident began around 3:50 p.m. when police discovered an unoccupied U-Haul truck, overdue since March 18, parked in a shopping center. Approximately 40 minutes later, Gordon Turner, 22, of New Castle, Delaware, returned to the van with another individual. As police approached for an arrest, Turner fled, hitting a patrol car before speeding onto East Main Street.
Though police did not pursue, Turner struck the two students on the north side of the road. The vehicle subsequently collided with two parked cars, injuring others. Turner faces multiple charges, including murder and assault, and was previously wanted in three other states.
